Being asked to play the organ at a wedding is always an honor. It’s a chance to set the mood for one of the most important moments in a couple’s life. I’d prepared everything and arrived at the church with plenty of time to spare. I was sat at the organ, playing softly as the congregation gathered, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Everything was going smoothly—or so I thought.
With just three minutes left before the bride was due to walk down the aisle, disaster struck. Out of nowhere, the transformer on the organ blew. Suddenly, the music stopped, and I was left staring at an unresponsive instrument. A moment of panic set in as I realized the ceremony couldn’t proceed without the music.
The clock was ticking, and there was no time to waste. Thankfully, my dad was in the congregation, and without hesitation, he sprang into action. We quickly decided that the best option was to dash home and grab my own organ. While the bride, groom, and congregation patiently waited, my dad raced back home to fetch it.
I can only imagine what the bride must have been feeling, having to wait at the church door while we scrambled to fix the situation. But everyone remained calm, and after what felt like the longest few minutes ever, my dad returned with my organ in tow. We set it up as quickly as possible, and soon enough, the beautiful sound of music filled the church again.
With the organ back in action, the bride finally made her grand entrance. The rest of the ceremony went off without a hitch, and I was relieved that the unexpected drama didn’t spoil the couple’s big day.
Lessons Learned
That experience taught me a lot about staying calm under pressure and the importance of always having a backup plan! It’s a moment I’ll never forget—and thankfully, it’s one I can now laugh about.
